How to Make White Bread

  1. Dissolve the yeast and sugar in 1/2 cup of water.
  2. Stir in a cup of flour.
  3. Let the mixture sit for an hour, then mix in shortening, salt, and the rest of the water.
  4. Add the rest of the flour.
  5. Knead the dough for 20 minutes, cover, and let it rise until it doubles in size.
  6. Divide dough into loaves and put into greased bread pans. There should be enough dough for three loaves.
  7. Brush the top of the dough with butter. Cover the pans and let the dough rise again.
  8. Bake.
  9. Remove bread from oven and brush with milk.
