How to Make White Bread
Ingredients
- 1/2 yeast cake
- 1 tablespoon sugar
- 3 1/2 cups water
- 9 cups flour
- 2 tablespoons shortening
- 1 tablespoon salt
- butter
Directions
- Dissolve the yeast and sugar in 1/2 cup of water.
- Stir in a cup of flour.
- Let the mixture sit for an hour, then mix in shortening, salt, and the rest of the water.
- Add the rest of the flour.
- Knead the dough for 20 minutes, cover, and let it rise until it doubles in size.
- Divide dough into loaves and put into greased bread pans. There should be enough dough for three loaves.
- Brush the top of the dough with butter. Cover the pans and let the dough rise again.
- Bake.
- Remove bread from oven and brush with milk.
